Heartbreak: Sweethearts Valentine’s Day Candy Will Be Missing From Store Shelves

“Sweethearts,” the tiny, colorful, heartfelt and heart-shaped candies that pop up in stores in the weeks leading up to Valentine’s Day will be missing from shelves this year after the original producer of the candy, Necco, went out of business last July, CNBC reports.

While chocolate may seem like the frontrunner for Valentine’s Day sweets, Candystore.com reported that conversation hearts were actually the most popular candy for the holiday in 2018.

Round Hill Investments purchased Necco in an auction. However, the new owner sold the Necco wafer brand and Sweethearts to Spangler Candy Company a few months later in September.

Spangler Candy Company said that it did not have enough time to produce Sweethearts before this Valentine’s Day holiday season.

"There are a lot of manufacturing challenges and unanswered questions at this point, and we want to make sure these brands meet consumer expectations when they re-enter the market," said Spangler Chairman and CEO Kirk Vashaw in a statement.

While the heart-shaped morsels will be absent from store shelves this season, don't be too heartbroken: they’re expected to be back next year.
